Kids are back in school, nights are brisk, leaves are changing colors and Halloween costume shopping is well under way. That means the holidays are just around the corner! Although Hess Trucks are loved all year round, we look forward to every holiday season in order to share the new yet familiar joy with our fans again. And of course before that, we’ll be sure to share some cool news about the 2016 Hess Toy Truck!
With those first chords of the rockin’ jingle “The Hess Truck’s Back,” a new era of the Hess Toy Truck was ushered in with the 1988 Hess truck commercial. Based on the classic 1963 chart-buster “My Boyfriend’s Back” by girl-group Angels, the first time that commercial jingle aired on TV sets up and down the East Coast was the moment the Hess Toy Truck became more than just the sight of the holiday season, but also the sound of the season.
The amazing journey of the Hess toys all started with a 19-year-old, the Great Depression, a truck and a lot of determination.
Picture this: Dad gives you a soft nudge to wake you up early on Thanksgiving Day. While half in a dozing daze, you follow dad to the car and head over to your local Hess to stand in line. The weather is cold, but dad has a thermos of hot chocolate to keep you warm. Waiting in line, sipping hot chocolate – it’s all part of the special bonding time you get with dad every year in the moments before the Hess Toy Truck goes on sale. Those moments are the Hess Toy Truck history. That’s the history of many of our fans – either as the dad or the boy in this scene who may very well be a dad by now.
We all know the Hess Toy Truck is a winter holiday tradition but did you know the Hess Toy Truck also has a springtime legacy? The Hess Miniature Toy Trucks.
Just kidding, this is our belated April Fools blog! This year’s toy truck is still a secret! Although the Hess Toy Truck design changes almost every year, keeping each year’s new truck a surprise until the holiday season has remained a constant. Whether it was revealed through signs put up at Hess gas stations, having social media fans unlock pieces of a picture of the toy on Facebook, or announcing the toy on NBC’s “TODAY” national morning show, maintaining that buildup to the surprise of the design will always be a special element to the Hess Toy Truck. This month, take a drive with us as we look back at the history of the reveal itself. And if you’re wondering about the design of this year’s truck, well, that’s top secret…for now!
