Hess Toy Truck Tradition Alive and Well in Albany-Schenectady
November 7, 2014
Kevin Ferrar is a 55-year-old avid Hess Toy Truck collector from the Albany, New York area. He drove up to the Mobile Museum in Slingerlands, NY on his motorcycle to spend a couple of hours exploring the Hess collection and sharing his story with Mobile Museum tour managers Mark and Jamie.
His father gave him his first truck, the original 1964 Hess Tanker Trailer, when he was four years old, and has been a fan ever since. He started his own Hess collection in 1976 when he was 16 years old. “I collect a lot of different things like cars and figurines, but the Hess toy is what started it all,” he says.
In Schenectady, Mark and Jamie met a couple that have the entire Hess collection except for two trucks. They plan on giving the collection to their grandson when he is old enough to understand the sentiment behind the tradition and collection for their family.
Another collector family who recently moved, shared that they had to use a second rental truck to move their Hess Truck Collection to make sure nothing would happen to them in transit!
A widower who visited the Mobile Museum shared that he buys a Hess truck every year in remembrance of his wife, who gave him a truck one year for Christmas.
There are definitely Ultimate Hess Toy Truck Fans in the Albany area!
